The Strategic Command episodes are quite successful when it comes to portraying the greatest conflicts in the history of humankind, namely the two world wars. Thanks to the extensive array of options and tactical possibilities, you can come up with basically any kind of strategy and put it into action on the battlefield, although you really have to take all the variables into consideration beforehand.
Strategic Command World War I: The Great War 1914-1918 is a turn-based wargame in which you get to actively participate in the first World War and watch it unfold, while playing as either the Entente Powers, or the Central Powers. Obviously, you can either choose to respect the outcome as it is written in the history books, or help Germany and the Ottoman Empire achieve their goals and change Europe forever.
As you might expect, it is not very easy to accomplish either of those goals, since you really need to know what you’re doing if you are to tackle an entire war. There are hundreds of things to take into consideration, not to mention the many variables that come into play once the conflict gets out of hand and the troops need to go head-to-head on the battlefield.
Just like the rest of the Strategic Command games, the action takes place in a turn-based manner. This means that you get to issue as many orders as you want to your units, as well as research new technology, tackle diplomacy issues and reinforce your troops, but everything is rather static on the world map and you have to wait another turn before you are able to do anything else.
Speaking of which, the map is quite huge and it certainly allows you to go wild when it comes to conquering other nations around the world. There are even parts of Africa and North America available, not to mention Greenland and Iceland out in the middle of the ocean. Obviously, a lot of careful planning is required, if you are to transport troops over large distances, especially over water.
Strategic Command World War I: The Great War 1914-1918’s best feature is the fact that you can technically choose any kind of strategy you want, although obviously some will work better than others. Hence, the amount of fun you can have with it is unlimited, especially after you learn how to take advantage of each unit available.
