Making History: The Great War is a turn based strategy game in which you will have to rule over one of the large powers in the 20th century and see it grow, forming an alternate path to the history we know.
The game is built to encapsulate a very large amount of details and features. And by a very large amount we mean that if you’re new to this kind of game, you’ll spend plenty of time simply clicking on each button, reading each line of text and summary of numbers until you start to piece together how things work.
Making History: The Great War’s demo seems to have forgotten the importance of a short tutorial or a piece of documentation that explains some of the mechanics. Nonetheless, the game isn’t all that difficult to understand if you take your time. It’s actually great to see how much work has been put into the numerous aspects to consider when running a nation or an empire.
Like mentioned before, the game provides pretty much everything you need in order to rule, or lead. At the end of each turn the game offers reports for several categories, informing you of external conflicts, troubles in your country, research status, infrastructure achievements and so on.
No significant event takes place without you knowing and being able to act on it or make a new decision based the given information. Being able to have a complete and detailed overview of everything allows you to properly plan a strategy, whether it’s for an invasion or a peaceful expansion.
Each region that is part of your country or empire provides certain minerals which you can exploit, you can improve infrastructure, construct new industry, station troops to defend and even help adjacent or far away countries with financial aid.
On a closing note, Making History: The Great War is a game you have to try out if you’re a fan of the genre or not. It looks good, information is very handy once you learn to properly analyze it and most of all, playing it allows you to accurately simulate a change to the course of history in the years of World War I.
It's important to note that the game is in early access beta at this time so it's still going through constant changes and improvements. Which is actually good news since it has such a solid basis to work on.
