Tabletop games are as popular today as they have ever been, or even more so, given the huge number of choices at your disposal. You can also enjoy them in a virtual environment nowadays, thanks to simulators that provide you with countless combinations and possibilities. To makes things even better, you can connect with people from all over the world and challenge them to a fight.
Longsword - Tabletop Tactics is a CCG with turn-based combat and a unique set of gameplay mechanics, in which you have to use cards in order to summon creatures, as well as move them around the map in a tactical manner in order to overpower your opponents. Hence, it combines the best of two worlds, so both CCG and TBS fans should be intrigued by the concept. There’s no story included with the game, mainly because there is no single player campaign either. This can be a bit of a bummer if you like to play by yourself, but then again you can match your wits with the AI in the offline skirmish mode. Not many maps are available in the demo either, but more are surely going to be added by the time the full version rolls out.
The interface is very important in a strategy game, because every function needs to be at your disposal at any given time. Although there are not too many options in Longsword - Tabletop Tactics, all of them are easy to reach, and the camera system is very helpful as well. You are in fact free to move the camera around the battlefield, as well as zoom in or out as much as you want. Lastly, the graphics are not bad, but they won’t blow you out of the water either. You can tell that this is an indie production, especially in terms of animations and object quality. The focus is on the tactics and the multiplayer component, however, so this side of the game should not have too much of an impact on the experience. Ranked matches feature a lot of adrenaline, which should be enough to distract you from the lack of detail in the maps.
When it’s all said and done, Longsword - Tabletop Tactics might just be an unpolished diamond at this point, because it certainly has the potential to become your favorite tabletop simulator. This can also serve as a framework for your own tabletop creations, thanks to the included editor.
