No one denies the importance or the size of the mobile gaming market, especially now when tablets and smartphones are everywhere. Even hardcore gamers dabble in these waters from time to time, because a few levels of Angry Birds are much easier to deal with on the loo than a match of Battlefield. Still, the two subjects must be kept separate, otherwise you end up with half-assed attempts like the game at hand.
Eternal Fate is a pretty neat idea in theory, especially if you are not very serious about your gaming hobby and would much rather prefer something simpler to kill time with. In short, this is an online RPG in the style of Torchlight, meaning that it’s all about killing mobs using special abilities and collecting powerful items to put on your heroes. Each level is different, and the challenge increases once you manage to gain more and more experience.
However, things break down right from the start. The game is ported from mobile platforms, but the developers did not really bother to adapt it for computers. You are thus presented with a very sketchy and restrictive interface, which has the gift of being extremely obnoxious. Not only that, but you are also forced to register a Facebook account with the game in order to stop playing as a guest.
It may be ludicrous to call a hack and slash “repetitive”, but there are limits even this genre has to respect. Diablo, Torchlight and all the rest of the big names in the category become repetitive after a certain point, but they try really hard to hide that fact at least. In Eternal Fate, you are constantly exploring the same dungeons and killing the same monsters, because the variation in regards to enemies or environments is depressingly low.
The gameplay mechanics require no skills whatsoever either, since you just have to keep clicking away whenever an enemy appears in your hero’s vicinity. The target is auto-selected, which means that you can just click wherever you want on the screen to attack. It is possible to change targets, but why would you want to do that anyway when it makes no difference at all.
In the end, Eternal Fate is just terrible, there is no way around it. It lacks content, the PC port is an outrage, and it’s just not challenging enough to keep you engaged for longer than ten minutes. Thus, one might wonder why anyone would choose to play it when there are much better alternatives out there.
