In the word of casual games, the term “strategy” is used for almost anything that doesn’t involve straight up shooting, since even match-three games are sometimes lumped into this category. However, even in the case of casual RTS games, players rarely have to concentrate too much in order to get things right, given the fact that the mechanics are way too simple for anyone to mess it up.
War Planet Online: Global Conquest is an online strategy game in which your goal is to build a base from the ground up and use it to produce units and challenge other players. To get there, you need quite a sizable army, and you can also use it to complete various missions that reward you with currency and special resources. The strategy part rarely comes up, on the other hand, because the only thing that matter is the number of troops.
To begin with, it must be said that modern developers have completely forgotten the meaning of the word “tutorial”. It’s supposed to show you how to handle the interface and how to work with your units, not do it for you.
In War Planet Online: Global Conquest, the tutorial is basically five minutes of the game taking full control and only allowing you to click on specific buttons in order to keep the action rolling. There’s no way to skip it, or even reach the settings menu before the tutorial is over. You also don’t learn how to do anything, given the fact that the game does it for you.
As for the actual gameplay, it’s all about waiting, since every structure, unit order and upgrade takes time to complete. This can range from a few minutes to whole hours, so you often find yourself unable to do anything but wait or play something else in the meantime. Obviously, there’s also the option to throw money at the game and skip the waiting entirely, but that’s the opposite of actually playing something.
Lastly, the interface and the graphics are clearly designed with touchscreens in mind, and very little effort went into PC-specific features, such as the ability to scroll around the map by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen. The graphics are pretty colorful and detailed, on the other hand, given the fact that you can even zoom in to get a closer look, but the particle effects are pretty disappointing.
War Planet Online: Global Conquest is not a bad game, but it’s filled to the brim with microtransactions and dead times that suck the life out of you. Hence, if you do not have a problem with the long waiting times, this might be worth your attention.
