Although casual games usually feature very simple gameplay mechanics to allow even non-gamers to start playing without too many problems, sometimes the developers include progressive mechanics as well. This allows players to engage in more complex activities as they progress, but without confusing them from the beginning, which is a nice touch.
Twilight Town is a simple puzzle game that allows you to tackle simple mini-games in an effort to win currency, acquire special artifacts and build structures around a virtual town. Although it starts off simple, the game gets more intricate later on, given the fact that more mechanics are unlocked and you have to keep an eye on multiple things in order to make progress and win more money.
To kick things off, there’s a tutorial showing you the basic interface controls, as well as the mini-games you have to tackle along the way. Most of these mini-games challenge you to look at a scene and find the required objects, but there are other puzzles too, including scrambled words and a few other variations. Unfortunately, the hidden object sequences often repeat the same scene over and over again, which is a bit of a bummer.
To make things more interesting, the money you earn can be used to acquire new buildings for your town, which in turn unlock more levels and mini-games. You can also find rare artifacts along the way, or even win them at the in-game casino, provided you are lucky enough. However, it’s important to keep an eye on your currency supply, because without it you cannot complete levels.
As for the graphics, it must be mentioned that Twilight Town looks a bit washed out and old, probably because it seems to use old, browser-based technology. This is not a huge problem, however, especially since the expectations are pretty low in the genre. Even so, the game looks a bit odd and pixelated if you decide to stretch it over a modern full-HD monitor.
All things considered, Twilight Town is not an innovative game, and it actually features very old and cliche ideas in most cases. However, it’s definitely fun under the right circumstances, and it features enough levels to keep you busy for a few hours.
