Puzzle games are not going anywhere soon, given the fact that there are still so many unexplored subjects and ideas in the genre, but they can be a tad repetitive nowadays. Hidden object games rarely feature different mechanics, and point & click adventure titles are very rare for some reason. Hence, it’s nice to see something different for a change, even if it doesn’t always work as intended.
Relik is an interesting take on the subject, given the fact that it allows you to both solve and create your own puzzles for other people to take on. The whole thing revolves around cubes, but the mini-games associated with every puzzle are very different, which should make it harder to get bored. On the other hand, there are some free-to-play gimmicks to watch out for as well.
In essence, your goal is to finish levels by solving puzzles, and as you move on from one level to the other the puzzles get trickier. Not only that, but the time limits shrink as well, which really takes its toll on your ability to come up with a solution. However, the good thing is that it is also possible to create your own puzzles and challenge other people to beat them.
In essence, building your own levels allows you to earn trophies and see whether other players are able to think as quickly as you. As it turns out, the game is not yet polished in this regard, because quite a few people are complaining about the fact that the puzzles get almost impossible after a certain level, which allows you to be undefeated if you reach that stage somehow.
Lastly, there are the free-to-play components to take into consideration as well, namely the fact that your progress is limited by the game. Hence, there are daily limits integrated into the game, which stop you from getting rewards if you continue playing after reaching them. You can only be challenged while you are online, which doesn’t seem like a very good idea in a puzzle game.
Relik is still a pretty fun experience, especially if you like to put your mind to work and see how you compare with other people in this regard. Hence, as long as the developers change things around a little bit, this can easily become a much more enjoyable game.
