Sandbox games seem to be on the rise in the last couple of years, especially when it comes to multiplayer experiences and survival flicks. However, whenever a genre receives a lot of attention, clones inevitably start to flood the market, which is annoying to say the least. In fact, the sheer number of cash grabs might sometimes obscure worthy games released by creative developers.
Pixel Worlds is far from a revolutionary game, since it barely features any new ideas in terms of gameplay or anything of the sort. Instead, it copies things from the likes of Terraria and Growtopia, and it would appear that the developers did not try very hard to mask the rip off either. Hence, it’s difficult to have a meaningful experience in Pixel Worlds without feeling like you have already seen this before.
Although every session allows you to create a random world, this is actually not as exciting as it sounds, since every world is flat and devoid of any structure. The only thing that changes is the block composition, but the worlds are too small for this to matter too much anyway. Hence, most of your time is spent breaking blocks and collecting resources to craft tools, items, clothes and building blocks.
It takes quite a while to gather materials needed to build something, because not every block you break gives something in return. However, you can find seeds that can be planted, and they can sprout into trees that provide you with additional blocks, clothes or other items. This does not necessarily make sense, but it’s a nice way to reward the players for their effort.
Naturally, since this is a free-to-play flick, you can spend in-game money for jewels in order to progress faster than you normally would. This does not create any balancing issues like in a combat-based RPG, but it does make it significantly harder to advance if you choose not to use your wallet. Lastly, the graphics are very basic and disappointing as well, especially since it’s obvious that this is a mobile port.
In the end, Pixel Worlds lacks the charm needed to stay fun for longer than a few minutes, especially if you have already played the games it tries to emulate. Hence, you are probably better off sticking with the classics instead of switching to this one.
