Free-to-play strategy games or RPGs have started to become popular a few years back, especially after the mobile gaming market took off. Simplicity is the cornerstone of the genre, given the fact that players must be able to jump in and out of the games in a matter of minutes, depending on where they are. Unfortunately, some developers forget that PC gamers are more patient and eager for some complexity.
Heroes Tactics is a casual strategy game that challenges you to win battles with the help of your mighty champions, while also searching for powerful items and exploring a classic fantasy world. However, there are some issues when it comes to the gameplay, mainly because of the stamina system that really limits the amount of fun you can get out of the game, regardless of your experience with the genre. You can unlock many different heroes along the way, each one of which has unique talents and roles once the battle commences. Some strike from afar using bows and arrows, others use magic to defeat their enemies, and some rely on heavy armor and pure strength to deal damage. Your tactics must change depending on the enemies you encounter, and the terrain is also important sometimes.
Since this is a free-to-play game, it has to make money somehow, and this one chooses to do so in the most annoying manner possible. Thus, you have stamina that keeps you from playing for too long, so you have to wait a few hours for it to recharge. Obviously, you can buy diamonds using real cash and bypass this restriction, but it’s difficult to see the purpose of this when you can simply opt for another game. The actual battles are nothing too special either, given the fact that all you have to do is move units on a grid and attack until they are dead. The tactical part is barely present, since there are too few special moves or environmental factors that affect the outcome. Hence, the units with the most damage points almost always win the duels, which take fun out of the equation in a rush.
All things being equal, Heroes Tactics does more harm than good with its annoying stamina system and overly simplified combat. Hence, there are not many reasons to give the game a try unless you have the cash to bypass the stamina barrier.
