Few series enjoy as much recognition as Fable, in spite of the fact that the franchise is not as extensive as some fans might want. However, the gameplay was revolutionary at the time of its release, mainly because it allowed players to make serious decisions that affected the course of the story and the development of the main character. Good and evil were two distinct possibilities, but you could still change your demeanor along the way.
Fable Fortune is a CCG based on the Fable universe, and it brings a host of new ideas to the genre. Hence, even if at first glance it looks like just another Hearthstone rip-off, there are some interesting mechanics at play, as well as the customary good/evil system to consider. To make things even better, the difficulty level is a step above most other CCGs out there, which should attract the veterans of the genre and provide them with a real challenge.
You start by choosing a hero from a list of six available ones, and each one of them comes with special abilities that affect their spells and cards. As an example, one of these heroes is a necromancer specialized in bringing the dead to life. This allows you to summon skeletons, recover lost cards and cast a variety of nasty spells that sometimes even damage your own units in the blast.
If you decide to give the single-player mode a try, be prepared to deal with some tough enemies, because Fable Fortune takes no prisoners. The difficulty stems from the fact that most enemies have extremely potent abilities that must be avoided, since it’s not always enough to play powerful cards and hope for the best. Hence, sometimes you are forced to avoid damaging certain cards, lest they transform into invincible monsters capable of one-shotting your hero.
As mentioned before, the co-op mode is the cherry on top, but it’s not what you would expect. Thus, you and a friend actually share the same cards and must work together to play them as efficiently as possible. Naturally, this requires a bit of coordination, which is why a voice chat might help. There’s the usual multiplayer too, where you can go head-to-head with players from all over the world.
Even if it’s not Fable IV, Fable Fortune is still a game worth getting, especially since it is free-to-play at this point. The difficulty level is great, the graphics are gorgeous, and there is enough content and variety to keep you busy for a very long time. And when there's an "Ogre fart" card, what more could you want?
