CCGs are definitely on a roll at the moment, given the fact that there are dozens of them released every year. Granted, most of them are designed for casual audiences, since it’s fairly easy to simplify the formula to accommodate beginners. On the other hand, new ideas are hard to come by in the genre, mainly because it’s a lot easier to rehash old concepts.

Brawl of Ages is an interesting combination of CCG, MOBA and RTS elements, except that it’s packaged in a much more approachable set of gameplay mechanics. The battles are very fast-paced as well, so you do not have to wait for your turn in silence like in most CCGs. However, the simplicity might also turn off a few players, given the fact that it feels like a  button-mashing flick sometimes.

As mentioned before, the action is very fast-paced and demanding most of the time, given the fact that you constantly have to send units onto the battlefield. This is achieved by clicking on the desired cards or using hotkeys, the latter of which is obviously a lot more comfortable. Positioning is important as well, since you can place units on a grid and watch them tackle the enemies.

Whenever you get tired of the AI and you want to test your decks or your skills against a human opponent, the game allows you to jump into the multiplayer mode and face other players in the arena. To make things even better, there’s a leaderboard and a matchmaking system integrated into the game, so you shouldn’t worry about unfair battles with experienced players.

Speaking of which, there are in-game purchases that allow you to get ahead in terms of content, but this does not affect the actual battles. Hence, everyone can get powerful cards just by playing and winning matches, so there’s no pay-to-win plague to undermine your efforts. Lastly, the graphics are not bad either, although they could use some work in the interface department.

Brawl of Ages is a pretty polished game that might just gather a loyal fan base in the near future, especially if the developers keep working on it until the game leaves early access. However, there’s certainly potential here, and you can already have a lot of fun with it.
