There are quite a few video game genres out there that rely on repetition in order to provide the players with content, as is the case with MMOs or dungeon crawlers. In essence, you do the same thing over and over again, except that you receive different rewards for every repetition. This doesn’t always work, however, because it’s very easy for the fun to turn into boredom if the gameplay is not entertaining enough.

Bit Heroes is a 2D dungeon crawler with an MMO component, which means that you also get to compete with other people, or even work together with them. Don’t expect something like World of Warcraft, on the other hand, because you are still on your own most of the time. Instead, the multiplayer part only comes into play every now and again, and only if you want to leave the grind behind for a moment.

The underlying formula is simple, yet effective, since it relies on the thing gamers love the most: loot. Hence, the dungeons are maze-like environments filled with monsters and treasure, which you have to clear in order to get better items. The monsters in question get tougher and tougher the more experience you gain, and the loot is better as well. Hence, there’s always a reason to go back for more, even if you are not doing anything different in practice.

The multiplayer component has its charm as well, because you can put your skills to the test when you are not running the dungeons by yourself. It’s possible to fight other people in PVP brawls, as well as collaborate with then for raids that provide you with better items. Guilds are part of Bit Heroes too, so you can find a group of people to join up with and go through some of the content.

Since the game is designed to both feel and look retro, the graphics show that as well. It can be a bit disappointing to look at the same tiles over and over again, and the simple environments can only be fun for so long, but the artwork is not too bad when it’s taken as a whole. The low pixel count means that the system requirements are tiny as well, which allows more players to enjoy it.

Despite its simplicity, Bit Heroes manages to remain entertaining even after you complete a few dozen dungeons, mainly because of the loot and the crafting system. The turn-based combat can be sped up, so you are not forced to endure long and boring battles.
