Fast-paced online games are very common nowadays, and while speed was equated with shooters up until recently, the trend has spread to almost all genres in the meantime. Hence, even strategy games require you to think and act quickly, which often means that you have to abandon tactics and focus on pure numbers instead. This is also a trademark of the casual market, especially when it comes to games designed for mobile devices.

Battle Brawlers is a fast-paced real-time strategy game in which your goal is to defeat the enemy’s War God using a variety of troops. You do not have any control over the said troops once they spawn, but you can utilize a few spells to affect the outcome of a battle. Other than that, you pretty much have to stare at the screen while your units spawn, move and fight all on their own.

Each match starts with a countdown that allows you to prepare, which basically means you have to choose the units you want and place them in your base. After that, a new set of units spawns every couple of seconds, and they advance toward the enemy base, with the ultimate goal being to defeat their War God, which is actually just another unit with more damage and more HP.

After every turn, the game rewards you with money, depending on whether you are making it through the portal and deal some damage to the War God. The money can be spent on upgrading your units, most of which have multiple levels to advance through. It’s also possible to purchase spells with your money, although it depends on how the tide of battle looks like, because it’s not always a good idea to sacrifice unit numbers in exchange for magic.

It doesn’t take more than a few minutes to realize the fact that Battle Brawlers is ripping of Warcraft 3 in every aspect, even if the gameplay is entirely different. The units may be low-poly models, but they are recreations of the same troops found in Blizzard’s classic, except with different names, at least in most cases.

Not only that, but the sound effects are directly picked up from Warcraft 3, which is probably not very legal when you think about it. If you manage to ignore this aspect, you can definitely have a bit of fun with the game in the 1v1 mode, although the fun stops once you encounter a player willing to spend real money on their account.

It’s a bit sad to see Battle Brawlers copying a classic in this manner, but that doesn’t mean  you cannot have a bit of fun with it. The gameplay is definitely more strategy-oriented than what you can find in most casual games of this type, but the fact that you can make your units slightly better with real money is a major drawback. Hence, make sure you do manage your expectations before going in.
