Adventure games need to provide you with a good story, some memorable characters and a nice selection of interesting puzzles to keep your mind sharp. The gameplay is fairly easy to implement and not at all difficult to get accustomed to if you are new to the genre, but the interface needs to be responsive and intuitive nonetheless, to avoid mishaps and annoyances.
The Tales of Bingwood Chapter 1: To Save A Princess is a classic point-and-click adventure game that does not go very far from the original formula, in the sense that it doesn’t bring anything new to the genre. Instead, you just have to read the text, solve the puzzles and get to the end in order to solve everyone’s problems, although the journey itself is definitely entertaining and enjoyable.
Story-wise, there is nothing you haven’t heard before, considering the fact that it all revolves around a pretty little princess that gets herself kidnapped by an evil wizard. Tom is but a simple fisherman’s boy in the beginning of the game, but he takes it upon himself to bring the beloved princess back home and goes on a journey to unravel the wizard’s plan and restore peace throughout the land.
As previously mentioned, there is nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to gameplay, since all you need is a mouse and a functioning brain to play the game. Clicking on objects allows you to pick them up or examine them, but you can also talk to people and read notes that provide you with more details about the events. The dialogue isn’t brilliant, but it is decent and there are plenty of different answers you can toy around with.
Visually, the pixelated graphics may bring back some really old memories to those who have been around for titles like Monkey Island and King’s Quest, which some may argue it’s a good thing. If the atmosphere and the events are to your liking, however, then the simple visual style should not be bothering you at all, especially since the environments and the characters are pretty well drawn, given the technology used.
The Tales of Bingwood Chapter 1: To Save A Princess certainly won’t win any prizes, but the experience is quite charming and you can have a bit of fun it. Moreover, the puzzles are intriguing and you may find yourself struggling with them, on occasion.
