SpongeBob SquarePants Obstacle Odyssey 2 Demo

SpongeBob is one of the most well-known cartoon characters out there, along with his friends from Bikini Bottom. Besides the endless conflict with the evil Plankton, things are usually pretty peaceful in that corner of the world, except of course for the little misunderstandings that end up as plots for each episode in the series.

SpongeBob SquarePants Obstacle Odyssey 2 is a casual platformer in which you control SpongeBob directly, and your main purpose is to help him navigate a variety of tricky levels. The game itself is not very polished, on the other hand, because there are many design flaws and annoyances that can ruin the experience. However, if you are a huge fan of the series, you might be able to turn a blind eye to all of them.

To begin with, the storyline talks about Plankton and yet another one of his plans to steal the secret recipe for Krabby Patties. As always, SpongeBob and his friends are there to save the day, except this time you get to control him. The story is presented using comic book-style panels, and while it may not be very complex, it can certainly spark the imagination of a child.

Gameplay-wise, your main goal is to follow the trail of bubbles all the way to the exit, which leads to the next level. Although you can collect these bubbles and receive bonus points, you can also ignore them completely and just make your way to the end of the stage. In fact, some levels are so badly designed that you can actually disregard the traps and reach the exit without bothering with the actual challenge.

There are other flaws to worry about as well, such as the awful point of view and the terrible controls. Even if the camera is positioned in such a way as to mimic a third-person perspective, it rotates wildly when you move, making it very difficult to keep an eye on the environment. Not only that, but it is also very difficult to control the character, especially if you intend on following the path to collect the bubbles.

In the end, SpongeBob SquarePants Obstacle Odyssey 2 has one too many annoyances to provide you with a good time, mostly due to the botched camera and the awful controls. However, you can still get a minimum of enjoyment out of the game, at least if you are a huge SpongeBob fan.
