Rally games have come a long way in the last couple of years, mainly because technology allows for much more convincing physics and graphics engines. As such, it is now possible to simulate the conditions on the track very close to reality, which makes the experience more fun as well. However, it is not always necessary to bet on realism to make a successful game, especially if the crowd wants entertainment above anything else.
Sega Rally Revo is an arcade racing game designed to revolutionize the genre, or at least that’s what it tries to convey through the “Revo” termination in its name. While it did not succeed in its quest, the game is still a good distraction for when you have nothing better to do, especially since it features a very fast-paced and entertaining gameplay. Realism is completely out of the picture, on the other hand, so don’t expect too much in that regard.
To begin with, it is worth noting that you have over thirty vehicles to choose from, all of which are fully licensed and accurately recreated as close to the real thing as possible. They are also separated into different classes, including 4WD, 2WD and classics, which means that they should handle differently out on the track. That may not be entirely true, but you at least have something to look forward to, because most of the cars are unlocked after you manage to snag a few wins in tournaments.
The actual driving experience is actually tons of fun, since you are constantly blazing across a variety of detailed tracks at considerable speeds. On the other hand, you might be disappointed to see that nothing happens when you hit an object, because you just bounce back on the road like in some kind of Mario flick. Not only that, but you can basically base your entire driving style on these flaws, given the fact that it may be better to just cut a corner and bounce back in front of your opponent.
The controls are as realistic as the cars behave, so don’t expect too much in that regard either. Most of the time you do not need to use the brakes, unless you want to perform a tricky turn around a particularly challenging corner. Thankfully, at least the visual presentation is gorgeous, especially when it comes to the vehicles. On the other hand, as nice as the environments might look, it’s annoying to see that everything on the side of the road is magically aligned to form a smooth wall, whether it’s weeds, fences or rocks.
All things considered, Sega Rally Revo clearly can’t hold a candle to the DiRT franchise, but that’s not its purpose anyway. Instead, it was designed with fun and adrenaline in mind, so you should at least make peace with that thought beforehand.
