Role-playing games bank a lot on the story in order to attract players and keep them immersed in the atmosphere. Since isometric RPGs used to be mostly static, there was not else happening on the screen most of the time, which is why text and a good story were a must have. Nowadays, dazzling 3D graphics may have ruined the magic a little bit, although titles like Skyrim and Witcher 3 bring back some good memories.
Eternal Sunrise is a typical role-playing game done in RPG Maker, which allows you to explore a fantastic world full of monsters and evil people doing bad things. Thankfully, you are able to make a difference by the end of the story, or at least try very hard to accept it. The game takes its inspiration from many similar JRPGs, including the famous Final Fantasy series, which is especially visible in the combat sequences.
To begin with, the story talks about a queen that gets assassinated by the main character, played by you. Although you are not given too many explanations in the beginning, it would appear that your deed has a reason. Naturally, the authorities try to catch you and one of the knights even succeeds in tracking you down in the sewers. As it happens, on the other hand, the two enemies join forces to deal with some other issue, which is mighty convenient for the main character.
Just like in most games of this type, there are random encounters you stumble into every couple of seconds, especially if you like exploring the environments. Since you cannot see the monsters on the map, it makes the experience a tad too annoying and repetitive after a while. However, the combat is quite fun, given the fact that you can use a variety of special abilities and potions to hold your ground.
Every now and again, the game presents you with a choice, which means that you can influence the ending and the actual story as you go along. Naturally, there are usually three choices, representing good, evil and neutral. They may not have a deep impact on the gameplay and the story, but they do make you believe that what you do has meaning and it matters in the long run.
In the end, Eternal Sunrise is a bit too generic from a gameplay point of view, while the story is not very mature most of the time. However, the atmosphere is pleasant, and you can certainly have a lot of fun trying to unravel mysteries and fighting monsters.
