Old-school role-playing games usually had to gamble on the story in order to get people interested, because the visual presentation wasn’t anything special back in the day. Hence, thick plots had to be created, as well as intriguing and relatable characters that evolved over the course of the story. In essence, it was like reading a book and having a say when it came to how the characters behaved.
Eternal Eden is a top-down RPG that tries to bring back those days, by featuring an intriguing plot to get you in the mood for an adventure. There is obviously a combat aspect involved as well, which is mostly inspired by titles like Final Fantasy, but you can tell that the writers had to put in a lot of work. Other than, the game plays pretty much like any other retro RPG with a top-down perspective.
The story talks about a land where people are immortal and forever happy, thanks to a mysterious tower that provides them with food and supplies without asking for anything in return. Oblivious to the weirdness of the situation, the folks living under the protection of the tower never had to worry about a thing. One day, one of your character’s friends decides to take a forbidden fruit from the tower and put it in a pie for the queen, which transforms her into a monstrosity and makes the entire realm turn on the people. Hence, the trouble begins, and so does your adventure.
Although there’s plenty of dialog and aimless wandering, combat is an important factor as well. The enemies are visible on the map as moving smoke columns, so you are never certain what foe you are going against. However, the encounters are usually fair and manageable, as long as you learn to use your special abilities, equip your characters with nice equipment, and generally attack in an organized fashion.
As mentioned before, the visual quality is as basic as it can get nowadays, featuring sprites and isometric landscapes with hand-drawn objects. On the other hand, the artwork is quite neat, and you can tell that the level designers put a lot of work into the environments. Each map is detailed and full of interesting stuff, as long as you take the time to admire it.
Eternal Eden can be a blast to play through, but you need to be pretty young to take the story seriously. Otherwise, the childish characters and basic plot twists won’t be able to provide you with anything enjoyable, which makes the rest of the game rather difficult to get through.
