Chain Reaction is an old yet still neat puzzle game in which the solutions come from putting together simple or complex contraptions. If you’ve watched cartoons, you’ve certainly seen a Goldberg machine, well, it’s stuff like that that you need to fix or make yourself.

Chain Reaction looks rather bad by today’s standards but as a game, it’s still pretty solid. If you’re willing to overlook that aspect, the game becomes enjoyable.

The goal is to use what resources are offered to you to get a purple monster and his rocket-like vehicle to a launch pad. To do so, you’ll use fans, monster powered generators, balls, electric motors, windmills and more. It’s a game that gets your mind’s wheels turning in an entertaining way.

Chain Reaction was designed to be a family game, something you have the kids play and the parents pitch in to help when the little ones can’t figure it out. In each level, you have the same goal but the steps to success change every time.

The objects you use tend to repeat, but the way you combine them is new in each level. This way, you learn to solve puzzles, and you get a clue as to how some other things work. Chain Reaction is the kind of game that helps out a kid’s imagination.

Chain Reaction is way past its days of glory but as long as it still works on modern computers, it’s worth a shot. You might feel like you’re in the stone age of 3D games, but it’s bearable once you start working on the puzzles.
