City builders have the unique ability to keep players glued to the screen for hours on end, even if not much appears to be happening most of the time. There’s always planning to do, on the other hand, especially since the design is never how you imagined it in the beginning. There are many key aspects you have to keep an eye on, otherwise the entire thing collapses.

Buildcity is a basic city sim in which your primary purpose is to raise a village from the ground up and help it expand over the years. You can do that by adding various facilities around the village, which increase the happiness and the culture of the people. Obviously, the game is not as complex as others sharing the same genre, such as SimCity, but it can be a good gateway to them, especially if you want something simpler to learn on.

As such, there are multiple modes to choose from, depending on how you want to experience the game. The campaign mode is structured into missions, starting from very simple ones, all the way to challenging scenarios that require a bit of work and dedication. On the other hand, you can also enjoy a free mode and not worry about any kind of goal, if you just want to keep on building your city.

In the beginning, you are only allowed to build roads, farms and houses, but you should take care while doing so, because you can really mess things up. As such, the farms need a lot of money to be maintained, which means that it’s highly indicated to start with houses for inhabitants. This way, the people pay you taxes, which can then be used to start producing food and various other services around the city.

Unfortunately, the game is not very friendly with beginners, because you need to use trial and error to figure out most things. Thankfully, at least the interface is intuitive and simple, but you still need to find stuff out on your own. It is also worth noting that the visual quality is relatively poor to modern standards, especially since the game runs at a very low resolution.

After it’s all said and done, Buildcity probably won’t please most of the city sim lovers out there. However, if you want something simple and quick to have some fun with, this might very well be a good choice, as long as you do not mind the lack of pointers and a tutorial.
