Top-down RPGs are as popular today as they have ever been, even if technology now allows for much more detailed video games. While gems like Witcher 3 and Skyrim obviously bring millions of dollars in profits, staggering visual quality is not really a prerequisite in the genre, which is why the isometric perspective is still considered acceptable, as long as it is done right.

Aveyond is a role-playing game designed to be enjoyed over long periods of time, given the fact that it features a plethora of quests and quite the massive world to explore. Not only that, but the story evolves rather slowly, which means that you have to keep at it for a while in order to witness the end. Other than that, the game is all about exploration and battling vicious creatures that stand in your way.

The story talks about a powerful priestess that is being hunted by an even more powerful villain, who’s trying to turn her into a slave. She escapes to a small village where she is taken care of by the family of the main character, played by you. However, the priestess decides to give you her special ring, which causes the villain’s henchmen to confuse you with her and kidnap you instead.

Gameplay-wise, you just need to jump from quest to quest until you reach the end, which is not that difficult to achieve. Most of the quests require you to go someplace and talk to an NPC, while others urge you to kill a particular creature/bad guy. Speaking of which, the combat system is turn-based and quite exciting, although it can get rather repetitive after a while, depending on how used you are to the concept.

Visually, nothing’s too exciting, but almost every map has been created with detail in mind, which gives you plenty to admire while you stroll through the realm. The textures are decent, and the NPCs are varied enough to not get very repetitive. The music is nothing out of the ordinary, yet you can still enjoy it every now and again if you happen to leave it on.

Although Aveyond won’t win any awards for its story, the game is fun enough to keep you entertained over long periods of time, thanks to the multitude of available quests. The gameplay is smooth and simple, so everyone can fully enjoy it.
