Rid the galaxy of aliens and upgrade your spaceship with all sorts of powerful lasers and missiles #Shoot 'em up #Arcade shooter #Space shooter #Shooter #Arcade #Shmup
Astro Avenger is no longer supported, so it is now impossible to purchase the application. Nonetheless, you can still download it from Softpedia and use it with the limitations listed on this page.
According to most video games and movies that touch on the subject of space exploration, aliens are out there, but they are not at all friendly with outsiders. In fact, it would be their instinct to annihilate us on sight, using powerful technology that’s eons ahead of what we would have at our disposal. Thankfully, there’s always a hero ready to save the day and eliminate every alien on his own.
Astro Avenger is an arcade shoot ‘em up that features all the classic gameplay mechanics of the genre, including tons of enemies, power-ups and fast-paced action. Your task is to fly a spaceship and shoot everything that moves, while avoiding the enemy missiles and keeping an eye on your shields. The goal is to reach the end of the level and go face-to-face with the boss, in order to advance the story.
Speaking of which, the plot behind the game is as simple as it can get under the circumstances. As such, the action takes place in the distant future, where humans have managed to explore the galaxy and make tremendous advancements technology-wise. Obviously, things do not go as planned, and pretty soon a war breaks out. Your role is to play on the winning side and destroy everyone who tries to do the same to you.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t take very long for the game to show its flaws, because you can pick up on them after the first couple of stages. In essence, every level is the same, with barely any differences when it comes to design and layout. As such, the action gets repetitive in a hurry, especially since nothing exciting ever happens. Not even the boss fights can break the monotony, unless you get excited at the sight of large spaceships with no personality.
You can pick up a poor selection of power-ups every now and again, which provide you with additional missiles, money or energy. In between the levels, it is also possible to purchase upgrades for your armor and main weapon, as well as powerful missiles to deal with stronger foes. The weapons behave the same, on the other hand, regardless of which one you choose to buy, which is yet another disappointment.
In the end, Astro Avenger is not what shmup fans would want to play, not even if this were the last game left to try. The levels are just too repetitive and devoid of anything interesting, not to mention the fact that you feel like every upgrade you purchase makes no difference in the end.
