Zombie Barricades

One thing the world is certainly not lacking is zombie flicks, regardless of whether it’s movies or video games. Open world survival games are just as popular nowadays, but it takes quite a bit of work on the behalf of the developers in order to make the experience feel worthwhile. On the other hand, gameplay mechanics can be simplified in order to focus on the atmosphere and the challenge.

Zombie Barricades is a top-down action game with role-playing elements and colorful graphics, in which you play the role of a survivor trying to tackle the zombie apocalypse using as much violence as possible. The whole thing takes place in an online environment too, but at the moment the servers are designed to hold up to sixteen players at once, so don’t expect a true MMO experience.

The game actually feels like a classic RPG, in the sense that you have to take quests from NPCs and go around killing things in order to complete them. Most of the quests require you to kill a certain number of zombies, but the gameplay is a bit more fun than that. Thus, you can use a variety of weapons and find upgrades that help you deal more damage.

As mentioned before, you can use a variety of weapons to deal with zombies, including melee weapons like bats. Naturally, guns are available too, although sometimes they might not be very useful when you have to deal with particularly nasty zombies. The developers promise many upgrades and cosmetic options for the full game, so there’s a lot to look forward to.

In terms of the graphics, the top-down perspective is a bit limited and clunky at the moment, especially since the camera can be a tad stiff and annoying. However, the environments are pretty nice, and the blocky characters have their charm too. These issues are probably going to be fixed in future versions, however, at least if the developers keep up the good work.

In the end, Zombie Barricades has all the makings of a great game, but it needs more work in order to be enjoyable over long periods of time. Hence, you should keep an eye on the project if you want to see more of it in the future.
