There are few other animals that we associate with mystery, magic, and wisdom as much as we do owls, and it is no wonder there are games, movies and television series that revolve around them. Games are not far behind, with plenty of titles that focus on the story of these wise creatures of the night. One such game is Riddles of the Owls Kingdom, at it promises to charm you with a unique gameplay experience that revolves you saving the Owl Kindom.
This is by no means a AAA game with state-of-the-art 3D graphics driven by a powerful and resource consuming engine, so those that think that this aspect is all that matter should might as well finish reading the review right here. Riddles of the Owls Kingdom charms you with a beautiful hand-drawn art style that is reminiscent of the old illustration you would see in the fairytale books your parents or grandparents would read to you at night before bed. The owls are drawn in such a beautiful way that you cannot help but embark on the journey ahead just to save their cute little faces.
The Owl Kingdom needs to be saved, and it is up to you to finish all the puzzles to unlock the mysteries behind this kingdom, and thus find out a way of saving it. The gameplay is pretty unique, and it could be defined as a color-coded sudoku game where the result is an image that looks like a piece of pixel art. At first, you may not succeed in figuring out how to play it unless you pay real close attention to the tutorial the game provides you, and each puzzle becomes increasingly bigger and more complicated as you approach the end, totaling 200 levels.
Levels are divided into ten chapters, 20 levels each, and each chapter has its theme in the form of a beautiful background. Finishing a chapter lets you gain access to the background image and use it as a desktop wallpaper, and some of them are indeed worth the waiting. The game features two difficulty levels, so it does have some replay value unless you have a good memory and remember all the designs by heart.
The artwork and enveloping music are enough to draw you into this game, and even if you aren't that good at solving the puzzles, you'll still feel satisfied by the atmosphere this title provides. This makes Riddles of the Owls Kingdom one of those games where telling a game apart from a work of art is hard to do.
