Craft items, battle monsters and explore a new world in this retro MMORPG featuring basic graphics and tough gameplay #Retro MMORPG #Role-playing game #Online RPG #RPG #Role-play #Online
Modern MMOs are designed to cater to almost everyone at once, making them pretty difficult to enjoy one way or another. Hence, the gameplay mechanics tend to be a bit too simple for hardcore gamers to get their groove on, yet they are not simple enough for complete beginners to get into a game like World of Warcraft or Rift.
Orake does not try to revolutionize anything in the genre, only provide players with as much fun as possible, while making things pretty difficult for them as well. Hence, the game is designed to look and feel like Runescape or similar titles from that period, although it also features a variety of new ideas to keep the experience fresh and provide the players with new things to do at every login.
To begin with, it’s important to undertake the tutorial, although it’s pretty much mandatory. Hence, the introduction teaches you how to use your weapons, cast spells and craft items, as well as interact with the user interface and find what you are looking for. On the other hand, the explanations are rather vague, so you might find yourself in the dark every now and again.
As always, it’s important to cooperate with other players in order to enrich the experience, because it can get rather boring and repetitive if you play it by yourself. Granted, the whole thing is just a big grind for the best items and weapons, but you can forget about that for a while when you are battling huge monsters together with players from all over the world.
Since this is an indie production from a very small studio, the graphics quality is pretty low as well, which may not be ideal for more pretentious players. On the other hand, the visual quality stops being important once the gameplay gets serious, because there’s no time to worry about how everything looks when you are constantly trying not to die.
In the end Orake is still in early access, so it definitely has quite a few bugs and inconveniences. On the other hand, it’s on the right track, so it should find a decent player base for itself if it keeps getting better in future updates.
