You would think that it is pretty difficult to create an MMO nowadays, especially since there are usually millions of potential players, and the content must stay fresh for hundreds of hours. However, there are plenty of engines out there that allow you to come up with a prototype in record time, not to mention the fact that there are so many sources of inspiration to work with and borrow ideas from.
Locus Solus appears to be just a blank face in the crowd at the moment, especially when it comes to gameplay, character classes and the game world itself. On the other hand, this is barely an alpha version of the game, although it’s difficult to see why would the developer release something so empty and buggy at this point. In fact, it has the opposite effect on gamers, because they might not have the patience to give it a second try when it’s complete.
As such, you start by creating a character, but you can only customize his or her appearance at this point, which is obviously very disappointing. Players expect a lot in this regard, because the genre revolves around character growth and using different classes to achieve the same thing. PVP is very important as well, and that’s not even a part of this early demo yet.
Another big issue is the fact that you are not allowed to use the keyboard for movement, which means that you have to click on the ground in order to reach the desired place. This system worked two decades ago, but it’s highly inefficient and slow now, not to mention the fact that Locus Solus is not a very tactical game. Thus, there’s no possible use for a mouse-only control system.
As for the graphics, there’s nothing pleasant to talk about, unfortunately, because everything from the engine to the level design is subpar for this day and age. Even if people could theoretically get over the old engine, the fact that the map is nothing but a handful of textures thrown together can be more than enough to quit playing altogether. On top of that there’s also the bugs to consider, which come in great numbers as well.
In the end, Locus Solus was definitely showcased too early, but even so, it doesn’t promise anything original when it comes to gameplay, character development or story. Hence, it appears to be just another grind clone that’s indistinguishable from a dozen other MMOs out there.
