unheimlich Demo

We all grew up with those horror games where the monsters and ghosts where big and scary, but so were the guns we had that we used to blow the um to kingdom come. However, when you apply the same game to a scenario where you have no guns at all, the dread level rises, and you either run for dear life, or hide like a coward. That's exactly the premise of unheimlich, and you will enjoy (or be terrified) every moment while playing it.

The game doesn't have a story per say, but the moment you wake up in a locked room and find a piece of paper lying around that tells you that running, hiding and picking up items are options, you can pretty much guess what is to come. You are in a house which quite frankly is designed to look more like a maze, and your job is to eventually get out of there, all while trying to avoid some big shadowy figures that seem to just appear out of nowhere. There is no combat system, and your only option whenever you encounter these shadow beings is to to either run as fast as possible and then slam the door behind you, or hide and wait for them to pass and lose interest in you.

The game features plenty of environmental elements that could be used to your advantage, such as how you can hide behind obstacles while jumping, or how you can crouch and hide in a cabinet. The monsters are also pretty scary, even if they are extremely rudimentary designed, because they always appear out of nowhere, and you never know when they stopped following you unless you turn around, but that will usually mean they will gain up on you.

While not the most visually appealing game out there, it does deliver as far as the fear factor is concerned, making unheimlich a game worth trying if you feel like going through a quick speedrun with some chills along the way.
