There comes a time when all you want to do is have some fun with a video game and not have to worry about the laws of physics, realistic mechanics, or anything similar. As it turns out, the best way to experience that is with the help of an arcade racing game, which does not enforce any kind of rules on you and dazzles you with beautiful scenery and all the speed you can handle.
nail’d is one such arcade racing game and it features all the fun things you might wish for, including ATVs, dirt bikes, nitro and crazy tracks filled with ramps and dizzying jumps. There is nothing holding you back from going as fast as you can, other than the occasional rock, tree or wall that appears in front of you after a botched jump attempt, or when you happen to blink.
In essence, the game features a couple of different modes you can try out, although you should definitely not expect anything as complicated as a career mode or something like that. Beside the usual quick race mode, it is also possible to enroll in a tournament and basically participate in multiple races one after the other, in order to see whether you can maintain the pole position at the end of the competition.
There are multiple vehicle classes and they can all compete against each other at the same time, which means that you can see ATVs and motorbikes on the track at once. However, it is also possible to customize them and add new components, in order to make them faster, sturdier, or just better-looking. Thus, you can change the engine, handlebars and the body, not to mention the fact that you can choose between a variety of paint jobs.
A lot of work and dedication went into the visual aspect of the game, not to mention the level design itself. Some of the views and landscapes are quite breathtaking, while the jumps usually send you flying for a few long seconds over railways, moving trains, trees and plenty of other dangerous objects. The control scheme even allows you to steer while you are in the air, which definitely good news.
While it is true that nail’d won’t satisfy those who want a bit of realism in their racing simulators, the game is meant for a different kind of public altogether, one that just wants a bit of mindless fun once in a while. When you look at it that way, nail’d is definitely a success and only the rather small collection of tracks and vehicles stops it from being a much bigger hit.
