Repetitive but fun activities can be exactly what you need after a tough day, or even on a boring day. Playing Bejeweled might look like solid boredom from the outside, but once you start playing yourself and see just how addictive the whole thing is, you might see its purpose. There are many examples like this, so it’s up to everyone to choose one game that helps them relax.
atorb is an indie game that looks about as basic as possible, yet it’s anything but that once you start playing it. In short, your goal is to shoot colored circle onto the correct orbits, while avoiding the differently colored blobs that are already spinning around. Naturally, this sounds a lot like Zuma, but there are key differences that make the experience unique and quite pleasant.
The first few stages are easy enough to help you understand the mechanics and get accustomed with the gameplay, but things get trickier and trickier as you move on. More orbits are added later on, and their speed increases as well. In fact, it becomes quite challenging after a while, since your reflexes and coordination are put to the test when everything is spinning really fast.
That’s not enough to keep you busy for a long time, on the other hand. Thankfully, the game features a few other gimmicks as well, such as three different difficult levels. Hence, more mechanics are added if you decide to raise the bar. As an example, the highest difficulty demands that you shoot each circle in a specific spot, otherwise the whole level resets and you have to try again.
This might prove to be too annoying for some people, especially since the game is supposed to be relaxing, but it could be great for those seeking a challenge. On the other hand, the game gets repetitive after a while regardless of how you choose to play it. That may have something to do with the basic graphics, since nothing really ever changes, except for the background color and the circles.
In the end, atorb is clearly not the kind of game you’ll be playing for years to come, but it can be the perfect way to have a few minutes of fun every now and again. The tougher difficulty levels are more than capable to put your skills to the test.
