A future ruled by robots is quite a common subject when it comes to sci-fi stories, especially since it’s probably easier to imagine AIs and androids instead of how a human society would look like. Every genre has a huge number of titles that feature sci-fi concepts such as this one, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise when a puzzle-platformer approaches the idea as well.

Xenocite Clad is a fast-paced puzzle-platformer in which you play the role of Xalia, a “syr” that finds herself in the middle of two powerful enemies that try to control the city in which she was born. The game demands quick reflexes and a bit of a background in the platformer genre, given the fact that the movement speed is quite high, and the levels are far from forgiving as well.

Story-wise, the plot evolves as you move through the levels, and it’s actually a lot more complex than you might believe in the beginning. As such, Xalia goes through a variety of difficult challenges in her attempt to discover her origins and put an end to the conflict between the two entities at the same time. Many other characters make an appearance along the way too, not to mention the secret levels and lore bits you can find by exploring.

Since the game is designed with hardcore fans in mind, there’s a special speedrun mode included as well, which can be selected when you create a new save slot and choose the desired difficulty level. This mode times your whole playthrough and challenges you to complete the game as quickly as possible, and the levels are designed to allow for quick routes, at least if you are skillful enough to control Xalia and avoid the obstacles at the same time.

In terms of controls, there’s not much to do other than run and jump whenever the situation requires it. There are all sorts of traps and enemies that try to make your life harder, so it’s important to keep moving at all times and avoid obstacles with grace. The retro graphics are very neat as well, especially in terms of level design and the color scheme that brings the sci-fi world to life.

Xenocite Clad should be able to please both casual and hardcore gamers, mainly because it comes with a built-in speedrun mode. Thus, you can play at your own pace or try to beat your times with every playthrough, which is a neat option to have.
