While mosaic puzzles are not something new, there’s certainly a lot of them lately, even if most do not try very hard to be original or include new gameplay ideas. Because of this, it’s difficult to be hyped at the sight of another title, but there’s always room for improvement in the genre. In this case, World's Greatest Cities Mosaics 3 introduces quite a few new mechanics that keep the experience fresh.
The game is part of a series, as its name clearly implies, so it’s actually very similar to the previous entries if you happen to be familiar with those. In essence, you travel to different cities, but there’s hardly any evidence of that if look at the puzzles themselves, especially since most of them are regular, Christmas-themed pictures with winter landscapes and Christmas trees.
Even if you are new to the game you can jump straight into it, thanks to the helpful tutorial that spans the first couple of levels. There’s not much to learn in terms of mechanics, but World's Greatest Cities Mosaics 3 does introduce a few interesting concepts into the mix. Hence, every now and again you have to change the way you tackle the mosaics because the rules are altered a bit.
As an example, sometimes the numbers are replaced by Roman numerals, which is hardly a big change, but this can confuse you a bit. Thankfully, you can hover over the numbers in order to see them in their classic, Arabic form. There are also a few mosaics that do not feature the classic solid colors either, because you have to reconstruct actual pictures using elements found within them.
You can always ask for hints if you get stuck, and you are allowed to make a certain number of mistakes before the puzzle resets. In fact, sometimes deliberately making a mistake can help you a great deal when it comes to figuring out the rest of the mosaic. As for the visual side of things, the game is very basic, but not at all ugly or unfit for modern casual gamers.
Even if World's Greatest Cities Mosaics 3 can be classified as “more of the same” in most regards, the new mechanics play their part well, so there’s an extra layer of challenge waiting for you. It may not turn things on their head, but you can at least try something new every other couple of levels. NOTE: This is a downloader for the game.
