Although it was almost just as violent and important from a political point of view, the first World War is not mentioned nearly as often as the second one is, especially not in movies and video games. However, there were plenty of crucial battles and important decisions to be taken back then as well, even if the armies still used horses and machine guns were barely being perfected.

World War One Gold makes its intentions known right from the title and it does come across as a straightforward game, although things are a bit more complicated once you get past the main menu. In essence, this is a turn-based strategy game, which means that everything takes place in turns and nothing moves in real-time on the world map, regardless of how long you take to think about the next move.

In the beginning, you are allowed to choose one of the many available scenarios, each one of which presents you with a different challenge when it comes to the final objective and the win conditions. However, it also depends on the country you choose to play as, because some of the European nations found themselves in big trouble at various points during the war, which makes it that much harder for you to succeed when all the odds are against you.

In case brute force is not the your favorite way of solving problems, the game includes a sturdy diplomacy system, which can be used to influence other leaders and convince nations to do things for you. By sending an ambassador with your conditions and playing your cards right when it comes to favors and demands, great things can happen without even lifting a rifle, although you should never put all of your eggs in one basket when it comes to war.

Graphics-wise, the top-down view of Europe is quite detailed, even if it doesn’t contain actual 3D models, or any kind of advanced geography representations. In fact, other than the occasional water body, the map is quite flat and uninteresting, it it weren’t for all the information written on it. Military tunes and hymns play in the background as well, which should make for a believable experience and a nice atmosphere.

To top things off, World War One Gold is packed with scenarios and campaigns, each one of which can keep you quite busy for a few hours. Thus, in case you are on the lookout for a good strategy game and a WWI theme, then this should definitely be on your list.
