Battle a variety of enemies and build powerful card decks in this TCG featuring turn-based gameplay mechanics. #Card game #Trading card #Collectible card #Card #Strategy #Tactic
Collectible card games have always been popular with a certain category of gamers, but up until recently there weren’t that many options to choose from, especially not when it comes to video games. Hence, besides Magic: The Gathering a few others, the genre was quite dull. However, Blizzard released Hearthstone a few years ago, and everyone suddenly got involved in the subject.
Wizard King is a basic CCG with simple gameplay mechanics and a rather unusual battle mode, especially when it comes to how the units are placed. Hence, unlike in more traditional games like Hearthstone, you are dealing with a very linear battlefield. The creatures are positioned directly in front of each other in a straight line, making it impossible for the ones behind to attack, unless they are ranged units.
While this sounds pretty interesting in theory, the mechanics limit your strategic options by quite a lot, which turns the matches into repetitive click fests. Even if you have the possibility to use archers and healers, it’s still nowhere near as complex as it should be to keep you invested in the action over long periods of time.
The central idea is to protect your master unit, which is the wizard you start with. The other creatures are expendable, in the sense that you can lose them and still continue the battle. What this basically means is that you have to keep your master unit way behind, so that it cannot be attacked by the enemy. While it may fall victim to spells, it’s not as bad as being on the front lines.
Speaking of which, some of the cards you collect are spells, which can be cast either on your units, or the enemy units. Whether you want to throw a fireball or bless your knight with extra defense, it all depends on how aggressive you want to be. Granted, the whole thing is still pretty boring after you figure out how everything works, but it can be fun for a couple of minutes every now and again.
When it’s all said and done, Wizard King is obviously not going to compete with the giants of the genre, but it may be the perfect gateway for those who are interested in CCGs and want something simple to get started.
