Being trapped in your own house might not sound so bad, but then again that is only because your house is most likely not that scary. However, things would be much worse if your home was invaded by nasty creatures, or if nightmarish events took place there. Hence, even the coziest places can become horrifying under the right circumstances, which is what the game at hand tries to tell you.

Without Escape is a point & click adventure game with horror elements in which you play the role of someone trying to stay alive in their own home. The game may feature slow gameplay mechanics and not many jump scares, but the true horror comes in the form of a pressing atmosphere and disturbing imagery. Thus, you should be plenty scared after only a few minutes of game time.

In short, the story starts with the main character getting home late at night, only to notice that there is no one home. However, things much worse when he wakes up in the middle of the night after hearing strange noises, but that is only the beginning of his nightmare. Thus, things get considerably creepier later on, but there’s also a mystery that keeps you going forward.

To make things a bit more challenging, you also have to tackle riddles while fearing for your life, which is about as fun as it sounds. Figuring out exactly what’s going on in your home is not an easy task, and there are many terrifying things to keep you from having a great time. Not only that, but your character appears to be losing it the more he stays in the house.

As for the graphics, the backgrounds are actually pre-rendered images, so you do not have to worry about performance issues. You move by jumping from one scene to the other, which means that the exploration bit can feel a bit flat. Even so, it doesn’t take a lot to creep you out, especially since the atmosphere is pressing at all times, thanks to the great music and sound effects.

Without Escape is a tad slower than your average survival horror, but the slow pace can actually keep you in suspense for much longer periods of time. Thus, it’s worth a shot if you are a fan of tense moments.
