Witches' Legacy: The City That Isn't There

There are many tales regarding lost cities, whether because they vanished under the sea, or due to various magical curses or other catastrophes. Thus, it’s always a thrill to read a story in which the main characters stumble onto a city thought to be lost, and even more so when the city in question is still functioning somehow. Granted, most of these stories involve Atlantis, so they tend to get repetitive.

Witches' Legacy: The City That Isn't There is a hidden object adventure game in which you have to deal with supernatural events and explore an unusual city. The game itself is not much different from any other HOPA you might have tried, but then again at least you do not have to learn new mechanics, which is always great. On the other hand, it might feel a bit too familiar and repetitive, unfortunately.

The story starts when the main character’s mother goes missing, and you have to find and rescue her before it’s too late. However, she appears to have been taken to a city that doesn’t actually exist, so getting there is the first challenge. Thankfully, you get a friend to help you along, namely a shapeshifter that also happens to be a ferret. Together with Bertha, you have to overcome a variety of obstacles and get to the bottom of the mystery.

Most of the missions you undertake follow the classic formula, which means that you start by having to gather a couple of objects in order to use them in the final puzzle and move on to the next area. Thankfully, the puzzles are fairly interesting, even if the mechanics are not very original. They also have relatively simple solutions most of the time, which is not a great thing if you are looking for a challenge.

Lastly, the graphics are decent as well, especially since the backgrounds are hand-drawn and very detailed. Each scene is unique, and you get to visit a variety of fantasy locations full of magical creatures and incredibly structures. Moreover, there’s voice acting for every character and most of the dialog, not to mention the environmental sound effects and the background music.

All things considered, don’t expect new gameplay mechanics or original puzzles from Witches' Legacy: The City That Isn't There, because that’s not the case. However, at least the story is engaging and the locations are memorable, which makes for quite the adventure.
