Although planes were barely out of their diapers by the time World War I rolled by, the military couldn't wait to unleash their potential in battle. Hence, the face of the war changed forever, since it was now possible to strike far away targets without endangering one's own infantry. Naturally, they still had a lot of flaws that would be fixed later on, but they did an admirable job even so.
Wings of Honour is a flight simulator that allows you to see for yourself what it was like to fly one of the planes used in the conflict, while also having to accomplish a variety of objectives throughout the continent. In essence, there are no significant historical battles portrayed accurately in the game, but it you do get to survey Germany and France from a few thousand feet up in the air.
The story itself is not very obvious or well-defined either, since the missions are not very organized and they certainly do not require any kind of emotional bond with the character you are playing. Speaking of which, your role is to portray a British pilot and fight for the Allies, which means that you are generally pitted against Germans and you have to come out victorious from the dogfights.
As most of the fans would agree, the flight model can sometimes be the most important part of a simulator, unless the game is targeted toward slightly more casual audiences. This happens to be the case with the title at hand, although there is still some realism left to please the less demanding hardcore players as well. Obviously, if the planes were as difficult to handle as the real ones were back in 1914, no one would really enjoy it that much.
From a technical stand point, it is worth mentioning that the gameplay elements are pretty sturdy and everything usually works according to plan, without too many bugs or annoyances. The planes are detailed and nicely modeled, but the ground is almost laughable when it comes to detail and the amount resolution of the textures used to picture it.
While it is true that Wings of Honour is not exactly a revolution in the genre, you can still have decent amounts of fun with it and have a great experience from start to finish. Hence, other than the disturbing lack of detail when it comes to the terrain, everything can be regarded as enjoyable and well-made.
