Wage war across an entire galaxy and defeat your enemies this real-time strategy game sporting nice graphics and classic gameplay mechanics #Real-time strategy #Strategy game #Multiplayer RTS #Strategy #Sci-fi #Action
Although StarCraft II is still going strong, the RTS market is pretty poor, especially if you compare it to what it was back in the day. You’d think that all this new technology would make it even easier for developers to implement new ideas and come up with great gameplay mechanics, but no one seems to care that much anymore. That may be about to change, on the other hand, at least if this game has something to say on the matter.
Win That War! is a real-time strategy game with a sci-fi theme and a whole bag full of new and interesting ideas, although it also tries to keep some of the classic elements alive at the same time. Hence, old RTS fans should be somewhat familiar with the interface and the core gameplay at first, yet still pleasantly surprised by the new features that enrich the experience and give you a reason to keep playing.
Probably the most important feature is the fact that the maps and the planets you travel to are procedurally generated on the spot, which means that you won’t have to worry about the whole thing becoming repetitive after a few matches. There are some pre-built maps as well, bust most of the game is designed to be as open and unpredictable as possible, both of which are awesome qualities in an RTS.
Naturally, it wouldn’t be much fun if you couldn’t match your wits against human opponents, and the game allows you to do just that. Multiplayer matches can be customized in a variety of ways, starting from the desired biome for the environment, all the way to the number of teams and the size of the final map. On top of that, you can also train on the artificial intelligence in the beginning, or when you want to try a risky strategy.
Even if the maps are randomly generated, the graphics still look pretty cool, even if there are not many biomes to admire as of right now. It’s a bit of a bummer that there’s not much texture variety at the moment, which makes the maps appear very bland and repetitive, but that’s certainly going to be addressed in the future. The buildings and the units are pretty nicely designed as well.
In the end, Win That War! is certainly on the right path, but it needs a lot more work before it can attract the crowds. As of right now, the lack of multiple biomes and the non-existent campaign are good reasons to stay away, but the gameplay mechanics seem strong enough to fuel exciting matches sometime in the future. Thus, you can support the developers by participating in the game's Kickstarter campaign.
