Modern wars are a tad more difficult to handle for commanders than they used to be, because technology can take people by surprise at any point. Weapons like unmanned drones and nuclear weapons make things even more difficult. However, all of these things can be fun to use in real-time strategy game, because there are no consequences for your actions in a virtual environment.

Will of Steel is a real-time strategy game that focuses on modern conflicts, although you only get to control armored tanks, medics, engineers and infantry soldiers. You do have a variety of tactical options at your disposal, but you may have some problems using them, because the game suffers from some issues when it comes to pathfinding and unit A.I.

There is a story playing behind the scenes, which starts with the fact that you play the role of William Steel, the son of a highly-decorated general. By using the skills you presumably learned from your father, you must lead successful military operations throughout Iraq and Afghanistan, although you do not really get to enjoy the plot too much, given the fact that it practically disappears after the initial explanation.

Just like in the Sudden Strike series, there are no base building mechanics, which means that the units you start off with at the beginning of the scenarios are the ones you are stuck it until the end, unless reinforcements are scripted to join you after certain checkpoints. Because of that, you must really learn how to properly move your troops and keep them from dying, otherwise the missions become impossible.

However, as previously mentioned, the game itself makes the entire gameplay almost impossible, due to many technical issues. The unit pathfinding is atrocious, while the A.I. cannot handle even the smallest tasks on its own. Moreover, there are some performance problems to top it all off, so you might have to endure some low frame rates as well.

All things considered, Will of Steel had some potential, especially because it does features a bunch of interesting mechanics. However, the plethora of problems and issues with the gameplay make them irrelevant, coupled with the fact that the idea is not very original either.
