Shoot ‘em ups are perfect after a hard day, because they allow you to blow everything up and release some of your bottled anger. However, they can also cause frustration if they are too difficult or the mechanics are a bit too rough, so not all of them can help with you relax. Thankfully, there are more than enough options to choose from.
Wild Arena is a top-down shoot ‘em up in which you control turrets that must defend a certain area from enemies. These enemies come in waves, much like in a tower defense game, so you get a bit of time to recollect after dealing with one group of enemies. There are all sorts of bonuses and power-ups that help you gain an advantage whenever things get tough.
There’s obviously not much of a story to explain things, but there’s no need for one when the action is this intense. Thus, you just find yourself in some sort of sci-fi setting and you begin shooting, with barely any information regarding the why and the where. You can also choose from a variety of modes, as well as try a mini-game like target practice or racing.
The turrets under your control can be improved as you move in through the game, as well as upgraded with better equipment using the currency you earn after surviving each round. On top of that, power-ups make an appearance every now and again, each one of which boosts your ability to deal damage to the enemies trying to storm your base.
As for the graphics, don’t expect an awful lot in this regard, because the focus was on gameplay and replayability. Thus, the top-down perspective is pretty friendly, but it kind of impairs your vision when it comes to the small details that make up each level. The music is not bad either, although it can get a tad repetitive after playing for a bit.
In the end, Wild Arena is certainly not the kind of game that sticks with you for years to come, but it may have what it takes to keep you entertained for a few hours. Moreover, the multiple game modes can be fun in short bursts as well.
