When it comes to real-time strategy games, there are a few winners out there that enjoy their crowns even now, despite the fact that decades have passed since their coronation, in some cases. However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing good out there beside them, since video games can flop for a variety of reasons, not just because they are bad or because they lack depth.
Warrior Kings is a real-time strategy game that somehow got buried when the launch day rolled around and not many people were aware of its existence afterward. Whether it had the bad luck to launch together with some other, more popular title, or the developers just did not advertise it well enough, the fact of the matter remains that the game barely raises an eyebrow if you happen to mention it.
However, it is quite a shame that it went like that, because Warrior Kings has enough solid gameplay elements to go head-to-head with the best of them, not to mention a strong story and plenty of interesting mechanics that were fun to toy around with. In essence, the scenarios evolved in pretty much the same way, though: build a base, train an army and try to take over your enemies, preferable by force.
The game features multiple religion paths you can choose when playing in the campaign mode, which means that you have the option to go for the pagans and make use of powerful demons on the battlefield, stick with science and utilize technology to overpower your enemies, or choose the church and enjoy a loyal order of knights fighting for you. Regardless of your choice, the gameplay oscillates by quite a lot, which is always a good thing for replayability.
From a technical point of view, the game may not have any fangs to show, but it does maintain some standards and you can certainly enjoy it even today, regardless of the somewhat pixelated environments. Unfortunately, that may prove to be rather impossible, since the game is plagued by a few bugs that may not allow you to continue playing after a few missions, unless you manage to find a fix.
When it’s all said and done, Warrior Kings may have its fair share of flaws, but it certainly rises above mediocrity in many aspects. However, the performance issues and the bugs work against it nowadays, so it may not be a very good idea to try it out on a newer operating system.
