Wargames tend to be rather tricky to get into, especially if you are a newcomer to the genre and you do not have the necessary patience to wait a few minutes until your turn comes. There are alternatives, however, in the form of simpler games that sport a more manageable gameplay and far less complicated rules, while also not hurting the original formula too much.
WW2: Time of Wrath may appear rather complicated at first, but that is only because the map is quite large and it may take a while to familiarize yourself with the hex grid. Once you do that, however, things get much less complicated and you can start thinking about your army. You are allowed to choose any country from Europe in the beginning, plus the United States of America, which means that you are free to approach the conflict any way you want.
There are multiple scenarios to choose from, including a few smaller battles that can be resolved in a couple of short turns. The great war, however, spans from 1939 all the way to 1948 and it takes 450 turns to complete, which should be more than plenty for anyone to come out victorious, regardless of the nation you have chosen to play as.
In order to properly simulate WWII, some events must occur at certain historical dates, whether it’s a surrender, or a new alliance being forged. However, the AI is quite bad at making decisions during the game, so by the time these historical events roll around, the situation is very different from what it was in the real war, which can break the immersion.
The simple graphics should not be too much of a bother, especially since they do not really matter as far as wargames are concerned. A useful gimmick is the fact that you can change the layout of the map and use a variety of patterns, which can seriously improve the look of the game. On the other hand, the core mechanics are still pretty flawed, so that certainly sits on your brain the entire time.
Overall, WW2: Time of Wrath is not exactly a bad game, but it is not very good either. The AI causes the most problems, but the rest of the gameplay seems to be working alright, at least if you are a beginner. Veterans certainly won’t see anything worthwhile into it, however, because there are far better alternatives on the market.
