Nintendo’s legacy is still alive and kicking even to this day, and it’s no wonder that so many modern games draw inspiration from classics like Super Mario and Zelda. Granted, the main idea is to expand on these concepts in order to provide modern players with something new, but that can prove to be challenging more often than not. Hence, the market is saturated with cheap clones that all feel and play the same.
WILOO is a 2D platformer in which your main goal is to collect coins and avoid the enemies that patrol the levels. As you may have already guessed, the game is inspired by the classics of the genre, and it actually doesn’t try very hard to be different. There are, however, a few interesting additions to the formula, such as the fact that you can pick up special coins that transform your character.
Speaking of which, your character does not have too many talents, so for the most part you are only able to jump around and stomp enemies. The difficulty is increased if you decide to collect all the coins from each stage, because some of them are strategically placed to be hard to reach. However, there’s no real sense of achievement as you progress, mainly because very few new mechanics are added along the way.
One of the interesting gimmicks that brings a bit of diversity to the gameplay is the ability to collect power-ups, which allow your character to acquire better skills. As such, by finding the monkey power-up you can perform much higher jumps, which should allow you to easily reach certain platforms and avoid enemy contact. There are other special abilities to unlock too, and there are also a handful of boss battles along the way.
The controls are designed with both the keyboard and a controller in mind, so you should be able to enjoy yourself regardless of which one you choose. There is no input lag to mess your jumps, so your skills are the only ones to blame if you happen to die. In terms of graphics, the 2D landscapes are very colorful, but the level design can be a tad too repetitive at times.
WILOO won’t impress the hardcore fans of the genre, mainly because it’s very simple and it doesn’t feature any new mechanics. However, casual players should have a blast, especially since there is plenty to do if you are a completionist.
