Urban Trial Freestyle is a racing and stunt racing sim that’s heavily inspired by the old 2D games with the same gameplay principle.
Not many of the gamers will remember a title named Elasto Mania, which started all of this craziness with motorbikes racing in 2D environments. Numerous games with the same principle have been launched, but nothing too major and or that is worthy of remembering. Then, in the past few years, a couple of serious studios have started to make games in this genre, and Tate Multimedia is one of them.
Elasto Mania was a proper 2D game, with 2D levels, character, and bike. In Urban Trial Freestyle only the track is designed in two dimensions, and all the rest is in three dimensions, including the background and everything else. Since you can interact with anything in the level, with the exception of the track, it’s easy to consider this just another 2D game.
The developers from Tate Multimedia are saying that their game has been heavily inspired by the ““godfather of urban trial freestyle,” Julien Dupont. That might be true, and we can’t test that, but since this is basically an arcade game that realism or inspiration goes out the windows. On the other hand, they might be talking about some sort of generic inspiration.
In any case, Urban Trial Freestyle is a very complex game that’s governed by the a powerful physics engine. All king of traps, moving blocks, explosions, and various obstacles are thrown in the way of the players, making the game a lot more difficult than it would normally be.
The thing is that the levels can be completed, and they are not meant to be a puzzle. The problem arises when you need also to make a good time, either for the sake of it or money rewards.
The money that is earned in the game can be used to upgrade the bike and to purchase new clothes for the rider. The clothes are not all that important, but they are a nice touch.
With that in mind, we can safely say that Urban Trial Freestyle is a really fun game and it worth a shot. The demo level only comes with four levels.
