Designing a good action game is not easy nowadays, especially since players have so many options to choose from. Things get even tougher if you plan on toying with the MOBA/arena genre, which has millions of players worldwide, split between only a handful of titles. However, with a bit of creativity and attention to detail, even independent developers can put something decent out on the market.

Unearned Bounty is an arcade action game with a third-person perspective, in which you have to survive out on the sea surrounded by vicious enemies. The game is presented as a combination between League of Legends, Halo and Twisted Metal, except with pirates. However, this is far from a finished product, so many features are yet to be fully functional or integrated.

To begin with, there is a tutorial to get you started, although the gameplay mechanics are not as complex as you might think. Hence, your primary goal is to explore the sea and destroy the ships you meet along the way, which is easier said than done. On the other hand, all you need to do in order to attack is face your cannons toward the enemy ships and fire as precisely as you can.

There are reload times to worry about, given the fact that ship cannons need to be reloaded manually by the crew, but there are also upgrades that can speed this along. Naturally, you need to defeat enemy ships and collect the loot in order to be able to afford the upgrades. This keeps you on edge at all times, because there is always something to destroy and a new upgrade to hunt.

As far as the controls are concerned, you use both the keyboard and the mouse to steer the ship, since it’s much easier to rotate the camera and fire using the mouse. The graphics are very pleasant as well, and the developers have really tried to make the game friendly for slower systems too. On the other hand, there are still some optimization issues that need to be ironed out.

The arena style combat is very effective in Unearned Bounty, but at the moment it feels a bit rushed and not very rewarding. Hence, we can only hope that the developers keep improving the game for future updates.
