There’s no shortage of spy movies and books out there, so the video game industry is no stranger to the genre either. Naturally, actually playing the role of a spy can be a lot more engaging than reading about one, so if the developers do their jobs, such games can be huge hits with the community. Text-based adventures are a bit different in this regard, but they can definitely be just as fun.
Undercover Agent is a text-based adventure game in which you play the role of an undercover spy trying to break a terrorist cell from within. Your every action affects the story and its outcome, so it’s important to think really well about what you are going to do about certain situations. Naturally, there’s always the possibility to go back and change every decision, at least if you want to see all the possible outcomes.
The protagonist can be customized by you at the beginning of the game, and some of the early choices have a tremendous impact on the rest of the experience. After that, every scene is dictated by how you choose to approach it, and the plot as a whole is shaped accordingly. Violence is an option, but it’s also possible to prevent everyone from discovering that you are in fact undercover.
Although your decisions are just lines of text that lead to even more text, the writing is strong enough to help you envision the action as it unfolds. Hence, torturing a man for information can be pretty graphic, even if there’s no artwork to depict it. There are all sorts of activities to enjoy along the way, including hacking, framing coworkers and even killing people.
Romance is always an important part of role-playing games, probably because it makes your character feel more relatable somehow. Undercover Agent is no different, and there are plenty of love interests along the way, including some that are on the opposing side. Sometimes, your partner can even have a say on the story as a whole, because things do not go very smoothly if you are in a relationship with the enemy’s son.
In the end, Undercover Agent is not everyone’s cup of tea, given the lack of graphics and the long paragraphs, but it’s undoubtedly a great read. The freedom to steer the story in the desired direction is enough to keep you engaged.
