The Tron universe has quite the long history behind it and there are many different spin offs depicting the legendary light-cycle races, such as Hollywood reboots, comic books and even video games. However, the title at hand is one of the most accurate and enjoyable representations out there, as well as one of the more major productions that had a serious studio developing it.
Tron 2.0 is a first-person shooter with heavy RPG elements sprinkled on it for good measure, in which you get to explore and enjoy the fascinating Tron world and be a part of the colorful dystopian world governed by technology. You also get to participate in some of the legendary events that are part of the universe, like the disc battles or the light-cycle races.
The story revolves around Alan Bradley, a brilliant researcher that develops the technology to digitize people and allow them to interact with the computer world in a much more personal manner. Naturally, a powerful company intends to steal his product and it even goes as far as to kidnap him, which means that Alan’s son, Jet, needs to go on a mission to rescue him and make proper use of his new technology.
Given the first-person perspective and the general aspect of the game, one can easily conclude that the title is but a generic FPS. However, after a few minutes of gameplay, you quickly realize that there is much more to it than just that, because you are able to improve certain skills and watch your character evolve the more you play. Hence, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor and actually put your abilities to use, which is always a nice thing to see in a video game.
Visually, the game looks exactly how you would expect, in order to remain true to the original movie from 1982: plenty of colored lines and neon lights, as well as mesmerizing special effects to emphasize the ‘digital’ feel of the world. If you are a fan of the Tron universe, the graphic style should definitely please you, while also making the experience much more atmospheric.
Overall, Tron 2.0 may not revolutionize the video games industry, but it certainly is a good title that deserves appreciation. The gameplay is solid and exciting, while the plot keeps you wondering up until the end. Moreover, it also looks great and it doesn’t require a lot of system resources to run smoothly.
