Being part of a mighty quest is something every gamer looks forward too, regardless of whether we are talking about an MMO or a classic RPG. Seeing your character grow in power, watching the world change depending on your deeds, these things help with immersion. However, the quest must be rewarding in the end, otherwise it’s not worth the effort along the way.
Trial of the Demon Hunter is a text-based adventure game that’s part of a series focusing on demons and the usual fantasy tropes involving goblins, witches and other similar creatures. You can create a character and pick from a variety of talents, each one of which can help you at certain points throughout the story. There’s also the possibility to find love in your journey, at least if you play your cards right.
The tale is ultimately about a great demon that must be stopped from achieving his plans, but the quest spans over three entire games, so don’t expect to find him right away. However, there are other enemies that cross your path as well, some of which have direct ties with the demon in question. Naturally, the choices you make also affect your character in the following episodes, at least if you decide to import your save.
The stats screen is where you can keep track of your abilities and relationships, because you can win the trust of many people or creatures along the way. Depending on their stance, some events can be approached in a different way, or you could even avoid an entire battle. Romance is also possible with certain NPCs, as it’s always the case with such stories.
Although most of your time is spent reading blocks of text, there’s also the occasional artwork piece that depicts enemies or locations, which makes it easier to imagine certain events. Don’t expect too much in this regard, but the drawings are detailed enough not to be annoying. You can also play music during your adventure, which should help with immersion.
As you may have guessed, Trial of the Demon Hunter on its own can be a bit underwhelming, but it shines when you complete all three chapters that are already available for purchase. Thus, it’s a great fantasy series if you are a fan of demons and magic.
