To the City of the Clouds Demo

If Indiana Jones is to be believed, being an archaeologist is about as exciting as being a secret agent, since the job allows you to tackle ancient curses, or even fight Nazis for some reason. Naturally, the actual job is far from a Die Hard experience most of the time, but that’s not to say it doesn’t have its fair share of charm, especially if you happen to find something interesting.

To the City of the Clouds is a role-playing game with text-based mechanics, in which you play the role of an archaeologist as you go on a mission to find a lost Incan city. Things get pretty hairy along the way, on the other hand, since you have to avoid all sorts of nasty traps and enemies in order to make your discovery. Not only that, but you are free to approach these obstacles as you see fit.

The whole thing starts with you being able to customize every bit of your character, including name and gender, plus a few personality-related traits that affect how you are able to tackle certain situations. After that, the game allows you to pick the desired route for every scene you come across, be it a battle with venomous snakes, or a nasty encounter with a guerilla army.

Since most of the plot-related events put you in contact with certain characters, it shouldn’t be surprising that you can get pretty close to some of them. Romance is definitely an option along the way, and you are not restricted in any way when it comes to genders. Certain traits become more important later on in the story, and some can even allow you to access otherwise inaccessible routes.

Given the many choices that are presented to you over the course of the story, it’s no wonder that it’s possible to go back and experience all the other routes you missed. In fact, different choices can make for an entirely unique storyline, which is always good to see in an RPG. The lack of graphics may be an issue for some players, but it really depends on how much of an avid reader you are.

All things considered, To the City of the Clouds not a unique game in its niche, but it does provide you with an interesting story to explore. Thus, it’s worth a shot if you do not mind staring at text for hours on end.
