Action-oriented RPGs are designed in order to provide you with a constant flux of reasons to repeatedly abuse the mouse click function, whether it's to kill the hordes of enemies that attack you, or to collect the valuable items they drop. Hence, you barely have time to think about the story, or form a connection with the characters you meet along the way.

Titan Quest is one of these games, in which your sole purpose is to gather as much gear as possible and leave tall piles of bodies behind, using legendary weapons and powerful magic spells. There's also a plot line guiding you throughout the adventure, which revolves around the Titans who managed to break out of the prison and decided to take the Earth for themselves.

In the face of destruction, your character must be the one who defeats the hordes of darkness by himself, even if he is a poor nobody with a rusty sword and some dirty rags to his name. Since most of the game world, characters and monsters are inspired from the Greek mythology, you get to travel through a wonderful land of beautiful ancient cities, as well as face off against abominations like satyrs, minotaurs and various other legendary creatures.

As your character gains more and more experience, you get to level-up and spend the resulting points into attributes and various skills, depending on how you want to play the game. Thus, you can either transform the hero into a fierce warrior with plenty of hitpoints, heavy armor and the biggest double axe you can find, or learn to master the elements and become a powerful wizard, capable of destroying your enemies before they even get a chance to retaliate.

The gameplay mechanics are as simple as they can get for the genre, meaning that you can get away with using your mouse alone to move, attack or use items from your quickbar. Visually speaking, the game looks extremely well, especially since the isometric view allowed the designers to create a stunning game world, with plenty of special effects and exquisite landscapes.

In the end, Titan Quest is exactly like you would imagine a good H&S title: plenty of action, lots of items and a steep difficulty curve that keeps you on your toes over the entire course of the game. The breathtaking environments greatly add to the overall atmosphere, as do the engaging boss fights.
