Puzzle games do not need to look good in order to be enjoyable, because the fun is in solving the riddles and coming up with clever solutions. Hence, even the most basic graphics engines are enough to provide you with a good time, as long as the puzzles get your mind going and they keep you glued to the monitor over long periods of time.
Tile Digger is not a very complicated game, but it takes a lot of effort on your behalf to see the correct answer and good spatial awareness to arrange the tiles in the correct order. As such, your goal is to create certain patterns on the board and use only the pieces you have at your disposal, without recurring to additional ones to make things easier. While the first levels are rather simple, things get significantly more difficult after that.
To begin with, there are two game modes to choose from, depending on how much time you’ve got on your hands. While the campaign mode presents you with a lot of levels one after the other and similar pattern themes, you can also opt for a random board and just play until you finish that. Thus, you are free to have fun for as long as you want.
Although the idea might sound simple enough when you first hear it, the game itself gives you no hint about what you should be doing. In fact, the tutorial itself contains no text or instructions, just a simple pattern that you have to complete and hopefully understand how it all works after that. Some may get it on the first try, while others might give up before they get a chance to.
Thankfully, at least the interface and the controls are simple, because all you need in order to complete the puzzles is your mouse. Hence, tiles can be clicked and moved around with ease, although there are some that are fixed and you must build around them. As previously mentioned, the graphics are not amazing and they were not meant to be either, so you must make some concessions in this regard.
In the end, Tile Digger is not exactly a brilliant idea, but the puzzles are intriguing and it takes a while to complete them, even if you know exactly what you have to do. Hence, if you have too much time on your hands and would like something to waste it on, this may very well a good choice to make.
